NEWS BRIEF
Colorado Public Radio reports that U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper and three other senators asked Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to investigate the deaths of four Rifle Helitack firefighters responding to the Knowles Fire in Mesa County. The fire later merged with other burns and became known as the Snyder Fire; another firefighter was injured.
The senators also requested a review of firefighting policies, including full-suppression tactics, direct attack strategies, safety priorities and management structure. A preliminary report released July 30 cited high winds during the entrapment and said a rescue helicopter could not land because of conditions. The senators said they had not received an update on a final analysis.
