NEWS BRIEF
Denver7 reports that Colorado’s October count, based on attendance on the first school day of October, helps determine public school district funding for the rest of the school year. State funding is generally calculated on a per-pupil basis.
Beginning in 2026-27, districts may use the current count or an average including the prior two years as the state phases in a new formula through 2031-32. The updated approach adds support for special education, rural and remote schools, smaller districts, at-risk students and English learners.
What to know
The October count is a key funding measure for Colorado school districts, but it is not the only factor. The state is beginning a multi-year transition to a formula that considers enrollment trends, student needs, district size, location and local costs.
