NEWS BRIEF

The Denver Post reports that Colorado voters will consider Amendment 87 in the Nov. 3 election. The measure would replace the state’s 4.4% flat income tax with six marginal tax rates ranging from 3.7% to 8.4%.

According to the report, the proposal would lower state income-tax bills for many lower- and middle-income filers, while taxes would rise for some higher-income individuals and businesses. Revenue from the change would be reserved for K-12 education, health care, and early childhood care and education, subject to the measure’s stated restrictions.

What to know

Amendment 87 would use progressively higher rates on income above specified thresholds, rather than applying one rate to all taxable income. The reported tax effect varies by income, and the measure would require voter approval before taking effect.
