The Denver Gazette reports that Colorado Parks and Wildlife will distribute $1 million through its Human-Bear Conflict Reduction Community Grant program to 17 recipients. The projects include bear-resistant trash bins, dumpsters, enclosures and other waste-storage improvements in communities across the state.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife received 27 applications requesting a combined $2.2 million, according to the Gazette. Twelve recipients will receive their full requested amounts, while five will receive partial funding. The program was created in 2021 to support local efforts intended to reduce conflicts between people and bears.
What to know
Most of the funded projects focus on securing garbage and other food attractants with bear-resistant containers or upgraded waste infrastructure. The awards do not cover every application received, and five of the 17 recipients will receive partial funding.
