NEWS BRIEF

Colorado Public Radio reports that Colorado approved five short-term training programs for the new federal Workforce Pell grant program: three emergency medical technician programs and two phlebotomy programs. The grants could help eligible students cover about $2,200 a year in education costs.

The approved programs still need final approval from the U.S. Department of Education before students can receive aid. College officials said strict requirements for program length, completion rates, job placement and wage gains limited the number of Colorado programs able to apply.

What to know

Colorado has state approval for five Workforce Pell programs, but students cannot yet use the federal grants because final U.S. Department of Education approval is still pending. The program’s eligibility and reporting rules narrowed the initial list of participating training options.
