Colorado Public Radio reports that Amendment 86 would place additional constitutional restrictions on mid-decade changes to Colorado’s congressional maps. The measure would require proposed modifications to undergo public meetings and receive approval through the state’s existing independent redistricting process and the Colorado Supreme Court.
The amendment would need at least 55% voter approval to be adopted. Supporters say it would reinforce the independent commission process, while the Colorado Democratic Party has urged a no vote and argues the measure could limit Colorado’s response to redistricting disputes elsewhere.
What to know
Amendment 86 would not itself redraw congressional districts. It would add conditions for changing a final map between regular redistricting cycles, including public meetings and approval by the independent commission and Colorado Supreme Court.
