Sentinel Colorado reports that Amendment 84 would require Colorado mail-ballot voters to add the last four digits of a Social Security number, a Colorado driver’s license number or a REAL ID number to their ballot envelope. Voters currently sign mail ballot envelopes, while in-person voters must present valid identification.
The constitutional amendment would apply only to mail ballots and would require 55% voter approval. Supporters describe the requirement as an additional verification method. Opponents cite privacy, ballot-rejection and processing concerns. Nonpartisan legislative staff estimated county-clerk costs of $2.5 million in the first year and up to $1.2 million in later years.
