Colorado Public Radio reports that the Trump administration’s Forest Service is proposing to reverse the default approach to motorized travel on federal roads and trails. Under the proposal, roads and trails could be open to off-road vehicles unless protections are established through subsequent planning, negotiations or legal action. Off-road recreation advocates say expanded access could be appropriate in some areas, while environmental groups warn of potential effects on wildlife, quieter recreation and wildfire risk. A representative of the Trails Preservation Alliance said the rulemaking, public-comment and revision process is not expected to be completed before 2028.
